The Importance of Building Strong Bonds

“And then—the watcher at his pulse took fright.

No one believed. They listened at his heart.

Little—less—nothing!—and that ended it.

No more to build on there. And they, since they

Were not the one dead, turned to their affairs.”

—Robert Frost, ‘Out, Out—

While this snippet of a poem is incredibly abrupt, it is also quite poignant. Life and all its adventures are, as we know, a blessing that we are daily granted. My purpose in sharing this piece today is not to sadden you with thoughts of your inevitable demise, but rather to encourage you to form bonds with your family and friends that are so deep, that when your time does come no one is able to simply ‘turn back to their affairs’.

Go about each day on this planet with gusto and zest; be the person your friends can lean on, and build friendships that you can lean on as well; be the bigger person and forgive & forget first, showing others the path to tranquility; and lastly, lead a life that sets the example for others, encouraging those around you to partake in healthy activities with you and to make yourself and your health, both mental and physical, a priority.

  1. Jon, One of the biggest obstacles to building strong bonds is the most important tool we all have. It is our ears! We need to listen to understand and not to respond. Being fully attentive is so important.

I worked at L.L. Bean in customer service for almost 35 years and I always discussed with my team how important listening is to helping people.

    I also coached my teams

to my LARRD principle. Listen, acknowledge, respond, resolve and document Document was especially important in taking customer service supervisor calls.

Hope you have a good week! Laurie P

    • Thanks for sharing Laurie! Listening and hearing are absolutely critical to building relationships. You hit it spot on.

Always practicing this for sure, but trying my best to make sure I do this for those around me!

      Enjoy your week too!
