Lending Kindness

“This planet has—or rather had—a problem, which was this: most of the people living on it were unhappy for pretty much of the time. Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movements of small green pieces of paper, which is odd because on the whole it wasn’t the small green pieces of paper that were unhappy.

And so the problem remained; lots of the people were mean, and most of them were miserable, even the ones with digital watches.”

—Douglas Adams, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”

Adams wrote this back in the 70’s, so a digital watch was quite the fancy contraption back then… It’s curious how with all our wearables and other gadgets and gizmos the sentiment seems to resonate all the same, perhaps even more profoundly today.

At the end of the day, all we have to give to others is bits of ourselves. As we know, all the money in the world can’t buy happiness, so lending kindness to others is perhaps the best we can do to help cheer others around us.

Keep that in mind as often as you can throughout your day to day interactions.
