Introducing myself as Coach Meg always still gives me a butterflies in my belly feeling. Coach, is such an influential title, and it is one I never take for granted. During my undergrad I always pictured myself moving towards the world of health/medicine/physical therapy and never thought I’d find myself coaching in a gym setting. After 3+ combined years in a cardiac rehab and a chiropractic/physical therapy office, I realized the life changing impact exercise could have on someones health. I knew I would be better suited in a gym setting where I could make a difference on the other side of health care. The preventative side.
I was always passionate about lifting myself, and I loved the fast paced, client facing setting of these medical offices. I was encouraged to put my passions together and within a few months accepted my first full time job as a personal trainer back in 2015. I have spent 8 years in this industry, working with a variety of general population athletes. Men and Women from teen to 80+, through various injuries and seasons of life.
As a young coach, I found myself always questioning if I were doing the “right” thing for my business and clients. The downfall of this industry is it’s largely unmonitored with no direct path for success. The burnout rate for a coach is incredibly high. The confidence of a coach can at times be incredibly low. There is a severe understatement in the creativity and organization it takes to be a good coach. Often times, ego leads to coaches not asking for help, or coaches who could help, not wanting to extend the hand for fear of losing business. I am forever grateful for the coaches I had around me that I could observe or could point me in the direction I needed to find educational opportunities to grow in this career. This online space is where I hope to bring together like minded coaches who can share their expertise in the art, business and science of coaching to help support their fellow peers in this ever evolving industry.
You can find me coaching at Iron Legion Strength Co. in Westbrook, Maine. My biggest role there is, coaching. I think it’s valuable to add, I am always still learning myself. The best way to do that is by being in the action. In my own training, I primarily focus on a mix of strength and conditioning, to keep up all the activities I love outside of the gym. At this point, I have had phases of many different styles of training. Powerlifting, olympic lifting, body building, Crossfit, kettlebells and Pilates. I have competed in a variety of road races, hit spin classes, spent time swimming in the community center and learned to love skiing only a few winters ago. I have my undergrad in exercise physiology and a masters of science in wellness management and public health. My entire adult life has been dedicated to this field and exploring the many different avenues it has to offer. I hope by bringing you all together, we can learn the best practices to better serve our fitness community.
